The Daufuskie Island Fire District is seeking Beaufort County approval to build a helipad near the main fire station on Haig Point Road.

The proposal involves removing trees and other growth in a roughly 250-foot by 250-foot area to allow a medical helicopter to transport seriously injured people from the island.

"They want an area adjacent to the fire station for the purpose of medical evacuation if it's needed," said county planning director Anthony Criscitello. "They would clear an area so that a helicopter could land and take off if necessary."

No new construction is planned for the site. Criscitello said the proposal came before the county's Development Review Team because it calls for removing a number of large trees.

"That's all it is, clearing land," he said. "It doesn't require any kind of building."

It was not immediately clear who owns land where the helipad will be built. Criscitello said the site is not on county property.

Attempts Wednesday to reach Daufuskie Fire Chief Edward Boys for comment on the plan were unsuccessful.
