Legend and Rumour has it that Daufuskie Island, South Carolina got its name from the Gullah people. Daufuskie was “The First Key” and Hilton Head was the second key. Thus we have Da - Fus -Key or island in a chain of islands off the southern most tip of South Carolina. I stand corrected on this falsehood by a local resident at Haig Point that lives year round on the island. The island actually got its name from the Indians that inhabited it first. Fuskie is an island rich in history, folklore and beauty. The island can only be reached by boat or ferry. The main ferry or Daufuskie Island Resort Ferry lands at the Daufuskie Island Resort Dock . (The public marina) and home of Marsh Side Mamas a great restaurant for crab cakes and beer is at the far end of the island and is another place to dock if you are staying in the historic district. The third marina is for the residents and members of the Haig Point Club and is private. Daufuskie is one nautical mile off of Hilton Head Is
