Election Day on Daufuskie Island-News from the Editor

Dear Front Porch Readers,

Please note the following:

Election Day is Tuesday, November 6th at the Janie Hamilton School next to the Billie Burn Museum. Voting takes place between 7 AM and 7 PM. If this is your first time to vote in Beaufort County and you did not provide ID with your Voter Registration Application, you will be asked to show a current valid ID. That ID could be a “current valid photo ID or a copy of a current utility bill, bank statement, paycheck or other government document that shows your name and address in this county”. Voters who are age 65 and over, voters with disabilities, members of the U.S. Uniformed Services or Merchant Marines and their families…are exempt from this requirement”*. If you have voted in Beaufort County in the past, you will be asked to show an ID with your current address. That ID could be any of the items listed above or your voter registration card.

Everyone will vote for Federal, State and Local races as well as Local Questions and Statewide Constitutional Amendments on the electronic voting machines. If you are not a Haig Point resident, you will be voting on the Special Purpose Tax District Referendum. A paper ballot will be used for voting on the Special Purpose Tax District. After the close of the polls at 7 PM and the electronic votes have been submitted to Beaufort County, the paper ballots will be tallied on Daufuskie by the Daufuskie precinct Clerk (Karen Opderbeck), a representative of the Daufuskie Island Council (Chuck Hunter) and the sheriff, who is on site since he transports our voting equipment back to Hilton Head after elections. The counting of the Special Purpose Tax District ballots is open to the public at around 7:30.

*As specified by the South Carolinia Voter Registration Mail Applicaton.
