Dear Front Porch Readers, Please note the following: From the DI Historical Foundation SAVE THE DATE: The annual membership meeting and dinner of the Daufuskie Island Historical Foundation will be held Tuesday, March 19. The guest speaker will be Scott Smith, Executive Director of Savannah’s Coastal Heritage Society, whose topic will be the Revolutionary War in the Lowcountry. Look for invitations and reservation information later this month. ********************************* From the DI Conservancy Daufuskie Island Conservancy - Island Dumping Project - Save the Dates. The Island Dumping Project will be explained at the DIC Meeting on Monday, February 18, 2013 at 5:30 PM at Mary Fields School. Saturday, February 23, 2013 at Mary Fields School volunteers will meet at 11:00 AM for a cooked lunch, assignment of Clean Up Teams, go to the dumping sites assigned and only remove debris that can be easily and safely picked up. Volunteers are appreciated. ********************

The Daufuskie Island Conservancy Presents "Waterways Excursion on the Tammy Jane" Monday, February 11, 2013 from 1:00-3:30PM leaving the Dock at Hudson's Seafood Restaurant, 1 Hudson Rd. off of Squire Pope Road, Hilton Head. Cruise around Pinckney National Wildlife Refuge on the Skull and Mackay Creeks. Open to first 25 with paid reservations. Conservancy members: $35 and Non-Members: $60.00. I, Julie Kapur, will be conducting a two day golf program, Feb. 21-22, geared towards the beginner to intermediate player. If you are ready to have some fun and laughs, then don't delay, call the Bloody Point Golf Shop at 843-341-5566 to get more information and reserve your spot. The class is limited to a minimum of six and maximum of eight ladies. In the event the temperature is below 50 degrees or it rains or snows, the class will be rescheduled. Department of Recreation and Tourism, Beaufort County officials and DI Parks and Recreation Committee will be attending. A special ferry tax failed in November, but a group of non-resident property owners trying to dissolve the Daufuskie Island Council cites the measure as a grievance. The Community Preservation Zone Association (CPZA) asked the Beaufort County Council for a slot on its agenda in a letter dated Jan. 3 to push for replacing the elected board with an appointed group that’s officially enshrined in Daufuskie Island Code. But the group did not respond to requests for comment sent to an email address provided in its letter and even people

Daufuskie Island Council Elections There will be a Candidate’s Forum on Saturday, Feb 2nd 1:00-3:00 at Mary Field School. The election will be on Saturday, Feb 9th 9:00 – 3:00 at Mary Field School. Ballots will be available on Sunday, January 27th at www.daufuskieislandcouncil.org, at the fire station, the Haig Point Mansion and at the Eagle’s Nest.
