Also please note that there will be patio seating only on October 20th, as the rest of the restaurant is closed for a private event. ******************* From the DI Co-op The Daufuskie Island Community Improvement Club will be holding a chili cook off on Sunday, Oct 21st, 1:00 at Marshside Mama’s at 1:00 PM to benefit the December 9th Christmas parade. Everyone is encouraged to enter their favorite chili!!! $10 for chili and hotdogs. $5 for kids and those who enter a chili. Two prizes will be awarded: Peoples Choice and Judges Choice. Daufuskie Island man unearths 18th-c. canoe on Turtle Island

From The Island Packet A Daufuskie Island resident paddle-boarding with his wife and several others discovered a rare canoe, thought to be from the 1700s, protruding from the sand on Turtle Island. The canoe, which is now soaking in a tank at Wick Scurry's restaurant, remains in good condition after an excavation that included Jim Spirek, the state archeologist who was part of the group that found and ultimately raised the Hunley. Spirek calls the canoe an "important find."

Second Annual Daufuskie Literary Throwdown on Sunday, October 14th The Second Annual Daufuskie Literary Throwdown is coming up at the Freeport Marina, Daufuskie Island, SC, on Sunday, October 14th, Noon to 7pm. Multiple authors will be there to meet folks, and sign and sell their books. Among them will be Janet Garrity, who has recently released her first book Goin’ Down the River, Fish Camps of the Sea Islands. Special guest authors will be Roger Pinckney, who is launching his latest novel Blow the Man Down during the Throwdown, Dorothea Benton Frank, NYT best selling author of Porch Lights, Patti Callahan Henry, NYT best-selling author of Coming up for Air, Mary Alice Monroe, NYT best selling author of The Butterfly’s Daughter, and Ben McC. He graduated from the University of South Carolina and earned an MFA through the Iowa Writers Workshop. His novel, Little Glory, has been purchased by a Hollywood independent film maker. He is a two-time winner of the SC Fiction Project and the Orion Writer’s Circle Award. Q) Some of your books take on a David and Goliath feel: traditional small town folks coming up against big government, however they are individually unique. Please note the following: From Bloody Point Golf Club Bloody Point Golf Club invites you to the Grand Opening of its Driving Range on October 6th! Nike will be here doing a Demo Day, and Golf, Etc. will be here to do club fittings. The driving range event will last from 10am to 1pm and is open to everyone, free of charge. After that, there will be a three hole Preview Event on the Bloody Point Course. There will be three Council positions available. Please consider serving your community. Sheriff J. P. Cooler will be at the monthly Council meeting to answer any questions next Monday (September 24, 5:30 PM at Mary Field School), and Bloody Point will have a presentation concerning some exciting news and events. ********************************** Gas and diesel are now being sold at the Melrose Maintenance Area on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday from 9:00 to 12:00, lowest price on the Island. ********************************** Girls Night Out!
