Sister’s Trip – Daufuskie Island, SC Posted August 6th on Candidly Savage blog on word press. Here is the link. http://candidlysavage.wordpress.com/ If you know me, you know I love to travel when time and money allows, so this will be the first of many travel adventures I share…. In 2008, my two sisters and I went on a trip to Daufuskie Island, SC, where the local mode of transportation is golf carts. It was February, and still pretty cold out (a balmy 48 degrees), so you can only imagine us driving around in an open air golf cart, shivering and wishing for a heater! The first morning, we decided to take a stroll along the beach. We parked the golf cart near the pool and walked down to take in the wonderful scenery. Upon returning to the golf cart, I noticed that my seat (the passenger side) was in the sunlight getting nice and toasty and that the driver’s seat was in the shade. I sat down and said “Ooo, my butt warmer is on! This is great!” My sis

State takes aim at unauthorized revetment on Daufuskie Island By JOSH McCANN jmccann@islandpacket.com 843-706-8145 Published Monday, August 1, 2011 State regulators intend to take action against someone who put "revetment material" on Daufuskie Island's eroding beach without authorization. The property in question is on Driftwood Cottage Lane, according to Dan Burger, a spokesman for the S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control's Office of Ocean and Coastal Resource Management. "The party has not yet been officially informed by a notice of violation, so I cannot release any additional information at this time," Burger wrote in an email Tuesday. Details -- and the notice itself -- remained unavailable Friday. Brian McCarthy, who owns a home on Driftwood Cottage Lane, said he was not aware of the state's pending action. However, he said he and owners of other property nearby had no choice but to pile sandbags to ward off erosion th

Marshside Mama’s, Daufuskie Island, SC The Scene: “Our bar is like Canterbury Tales; there’s a little bit of everything,” says bartender Tyler Gerow of the honky-tonk Marshside Mama’s. Owner Beth Shipman cooks up mouthwatering gumbo, shrimp, and grits, and there’s always the freshest fish because fishermen pull up to the dock to drop off the catch of the day. Even though it’s only a 45-minute ferry ride from Hilton Head, the ferry doesn’t always run, so the crowd is mostly local boaters. They rock out to live bands on weekends and follow the lead of owner Beth, who’s known to yell out, “No whining, just dance.” Signature Drink: Marshside Mama’s Rum Fruity: four different types of rum mixed with fruit juices, $ Here is the Travel and Leisure Link for you. Brian McCarthy had no intention of buying the Bloody Point golf course on Daufuskie Island when he entered a Charleston courtroom late last month. By the time he left, he had won an auction for the course, which has languished for more than two years during the bankruptcy of the Daufuskie Island Resort & Breathe Spa. "I was totally shocked walking out of there owning the place," McCarthy said this week. A judge on Friday authorized the sale of Bloody Point from the bankruptcy estate to McCarthy. He bid $1.64 million for the course, as well as a pool, clubhouse, spa and tennis courts. McCarthy is a longtime
