Daufuskie Island resort parceled off to creditors By JOSH McCANN jmccann@islandpacket.com 843-706-8145 Published Monday, March 28, 2011 Bankruptcy judge says Daufuskie resort can be sold in parcels, Nov. 10, 2010 The Daufuskie Island Resort & Breathe Spa is being broken up after more than two years in bankruptcy. Two secured creditors on Friday each took back a chunk of the resort's assets, splitting what was once a major employer on the sparsely developed island. A judge had authorized the creditors' moves late last year, but the trustee overseeing the bankruptcy had continued to try to sell the entire resort to a single buyer until the creditors' deals closed. "Despite every best effort and two years of very hard work during extremely difficult economic times, a single qualified purchaser simply did not materialize," said Tobin Spirer, a spokesman for trustee Robert C. The rocker — whose wife, Elaine, recently filed for divorce and is now said to be dating actress Meg Ryan — saw in 2011 at his Daufuskie Island, S.C., home, People magazine reports. “John and Elaine spent a great deal of time in the house over the summer and they looked to be very happy,” said one nosy neighbor. “They both love the area, especially Savannah. We were surprised to hear of the split as Elaine has taken good care of John since he had his heart attack [in 1994].” Meanwhile, Elaine has devoted quite a bit of time to local charity work in Bloomington, Ind., near their main home on Lake Monroe. Iron man: Daufuskie artist forges ahead with ornament project Monday, 29 November 2010 10:10 Take a talented Daufuskie Island artist and mix him with the students at Daufuskie Island Elementary School and the result is a collection of whimsical, colorful hand-crafted ornaments. For the past four years, Chase Allen of Iron Fish Art has provided 500 hand-cut fish ornaments for students to decorate. The ornaments are donated to the staff of Volunteers in Medicine, who glitter, wire and package the colorful artwork for sale at $10 each. The artist knows firsthand the value of the free medical care provided by Volunteers in Medicine. “Before I got health insurance, I used VIM,” Allen said. “I don’t know what I would have done without them.” Allen has been creating iron fish, mermaids and crab sculptures on Daufuskie since 2001, and his work has been featured in national publications including Coastal Living and Southern Living. “I love getting the kids involved on this project,” sai
