Milk is heavy to lug to and from a boat, and eggs often break during the journey. That's one reason many residents of Daufuskie Island's sparsely developed 5,000 acres have collaborated to create a cooperative farm they expect will diminish their need to venture off the island. The course shut down for about a month and a half after the Daufuskie Island Resort & Breathe Spa filed for bankruptcy protection in January 2009, but a skeleton crew of workers has since reopened it and kept it alive on a shoestring with dues voluntarily paid by a loyal group of members. The Island Packet of Hilton Head reported the Melrose course on Daufuskie Island is lush even though it's operated without electricity for more than two months. The island is only accessible by boat, and Bubba Strickland was kind enough to give us a lift to the county docks.
