Ok so my blog is suppose to only be positive and uplifting but for 3weeks now I have been excited about the county implementing the new DI Ferry Service in order to save the $30.00 round trip passage. Here is how it should work 1st Senior Citizens, Students, disabled or handicapped. $1.00 2nd Resident Landowners/Taxpayers $2.00 3rd Non Resident Landowner/Taxpayers $3.00 4th Residents-$5.00 5th Residents Guests & Visitors $6.00 Well guess what it does not work. The county won't call you back, won't put you on their "list" and won't let you know what is going on. Oh they will tell you to call 5 different people (who won't help you). Basically the system goes like this. If you know someone that works for Beaufort County Government you may get placed on the "magic list" that grants you what your taxes already paid for anyway. Needless to say "fuskie girl is not happy about the ferry".

The Daufuskie Island Conservancy is hosting their annual Oyster Roast at Freeport Marina, DI on April 26th from (3pm-7pm). $20 Adults-$8 ages 6-12 (5 and under free)-Cash Bar. Writer Lissa Poirot-spotlights Daufuskie Island in the Atlanta Metro area with her great article in Points North Magazine called "A Tale of Two Islands". The article discusses her young families recent vacation to Melrose and the Daufuskie Island Resort. It highlights the differences between Hilton Head and Daufuskie Islands and how both are very relaxing local Atlanta getaways.

My husband and I decided on Saturday, March 1st to take our bikes on the Melrose Ferry and head over to Daufuskie Island from Hilton Head Island. The weather was about 70degrees and as always we met wonderful, interesting people on the 50 minute boat trip over. We began by riding up Cooper River Landing, past Jake Washington, to Haig Pt Rd past the entrance to Haig Point a wonderful private golf community on the island where most of the year round residence live and down the majestic Avenue of the Oaks that use to lead up to the main mansion on the Melrose Plantation. Spanish Moss was dripping from the trees, the golf course was lush and green and the only sound as if you could hear a pin drop was the faint sound of a golfer teeing off on the Jack Nicholson Melrose Course. The most interesting thing that happened to us today was on the back side of the island, the marshside , near the famed Marshside Mamas restaurant and bar. This was one of the greatest weeks of my life. I got to meet the famed author Pat Conroy, speaking and signing books at my alma mater Oglethorpe University in Atlanta. He is an extraordinary storyteller and spoke about his younger years in Beaufort and a little on teaching School on Daufuskie Island. I highly recommend the Water is Wide about Daufuskie Island but I also recommend Pats newest book the Pat Conroy Cookbook. It's not so much a cook book as storys of the famed authors life and recipes that are included.

Legend and Rumour has it that Daufuskie Island, South Carolina got its name from the Gullah people. Daufuskie was “The First Key” and Hilton Head was the second key. Thus we have Da - Fus -Key or island in a chain of islands off the southern most tip of South Carolina. I stand corrected on this falsehood by a local resident at Haig Point that lives year round on the island. The island actually got its name from the Indians that inhabited it first. Fuskie is an island rich in history, folklore and beauty. The island can only be reached by boat or ferry. The main ferry or Daufuskie Island Resort Ferry lands at the Daufuskie Island Resort Dock . (The public marina) and home of Marsh Side Mamas a great restaurant for crab cakes and beer is at the far end of the island and is another place to dock if you are staying in the historic district.
